Salary or Pay Range: $22.11/hr. - $26.05/hr. (Dept. budgeted range: $22.11/hr. - $23.40/hr. Commensurate with experience)
THIS POSITION IS PERMANENTLY LOCATED IN TULARE, CA.
Under supervision, provide basic laboratory/office support in multiple sections within the Tulare Laboratory. Perform regular equipment maintenance and calibrations, general laboratory cleaning and disinfection and sample preparations for testing. Biohazardous waste collection, sterilization, and proper discarding on a regular basis. Media inventory, preparation, and distribution to laboratory sections as needed. Perform primary inoculation of bacterial media and bacterial subcultures as directed. Centrifugation of blood samples followed by serum collection. Process fresh tissues and other specimens for testing. Prepare formalin fixed tissues for long term storage. Washing and re-filling of formalin containers. Embedding of formalin fixed tissues and cover slipping of stained slides. Filing paraffin embedded tissue blocks and slides. Receiving samples from clients and couriers, assigning tests and distributing specimens to appropriate sections or laboratories.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience working in a laboratory diagnostic setting including specimen handling, operation of laboratory equipment, preparing/mixing/inventory of reagents, & sterile/ general laboratory techniques.
• Skills and demonstrated experience to store, record and track samples and data sheets in an efficient, timely and accurate manner.
• Working knowledge and skills with quality control methods in a diagnostic laboratory including proper identification, labeling and completing of documents related to received animals, specimens, and/or supplies; and maintaining accurate inventory and quality control records for biological media/reagents.
• Knowledge of and skills to perform calculations for reagent dilutions for diagnostic methods including electrophoresis, chromatography, PCR, and immunology/serology.
• Customer service skills, with the experience to interact with individuals at all levels of the University and with external clients.
• Skills to communicate complex and sensitive information, negotiate and resolve conflicts and promote teamwork.
• Skills with word processing, spreadsheets and database applications in a Windows environment for correspondences, documentation and accurately enter data into computers.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working in a veterinary/medical laboratory diagnostic setting; including specimen handling, operation of laboratory equipment/LIMS, preparing/mixing/inventory of reagents, & sterile/ general laboratory techniques.
• Experience maintaining, tracking, calibrating lab equipment and ordering/preparation of lab supplies, reagents, buffers, and media as required in accredited diagnostic laboratories.
• Skills to properly handle bio-waste for collection, sterilization and disposal.
• Skills to perform cost-effective ordering and use of laboratory and/or office supplies and equipment.
• Organizational skills to facilitate completing office and/or laboratory tasks within the same day, maintain complex data files/records for testing results, legal defensibility, client records, and equipment maintenance/shipping logs and records.
