The University of Georgia’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Field Services Section brings together 3 hospital service: General Large Animal Ambulatory Service, Theriogenology, and Production Medicine Services. The Section currently includes 9 faculty, 4-6 house officers and 3 veterinary assistants. The General Farm Practice Service provides primary and selected specialized veterinary care to a mixed large animal population in the field.
All services in the Field Services Section share a mission to advance animal health and well-being through high quality large animal veterinary practice in the field with the ability to offer selected specialty services, clinical education for veterinary students, interns, and residents, and clinically applicable scientific study. The General Large Animal Ambulatory Service serves a diverse large animal caseload (majority equine) primarily in the greater Athens, GA area meeting the needs of local large animals and their owners while providing high quality clinical education. The General Large Animal Ambulatory Service (Farm Practice) clinical rotation for fourth year students is a cornerstone opportunity for gaining experience and knowledge in large animal primary, first-opinion care in the field. Thanks to the diverse qualifications of the faculty and collaborative efforts of the services within the section, patients, clients, and students benefit from the wide spectrum of veterinary services that can be provided.
As a clinical track position, most of the faculty member’s time will be allocated to clinical teaching and service. The specific faculty assignment will be tailored to the interests of the candidate in conjunction with the missions of the Farm Practice service and Departmental needs. Experience and comfort with equine routine/preventative care and emergencies and willingness to provide veterinary care to other large animal species is required. Expertise, interest, and/or advanced training in an area of practice that would complement the current team is considered highly advantageous. The successful candidate should have an interest in promoting the diverse caseload and augmenting the services offered to best serve the teaching and service needs of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Service to clients is an integral part of hospital duties. All faculty are expected to participate in scholarly activity related to clinical service and teaching, but establishing an independent research program is not expected.
